About Independus
We promote the welfare of disabled people resident within the districts of Richmondshire and Hambleton in North Yorkshire
We were formed to enable disabled people to control their own lives through the provision of facilities, services and support in line with the Governments own recommendation that each locality should have a user led group working to promote disability issues, a centre for independent living.
Independus was launched in October 2008 and became a charity in June 2009.
We give free advice and information on Direct Payments, Individual Budgets, Disability awareness and anything that has been identified as being needed locally or requires comment on from a disability perspective.
What is a Centre for Independent Living (CIL)?
- The Government says that every local area must have a CIL by 2010
- It is an organisation controlled and managed by disabled people.
- It will provide services like advice and information, support with direct payments/individual budgets, disability awareness training, advocacy and other services identified as being needed locally.
Why have a CIL?
- Disabled people are the experts on disability issues!
- It will extend the choices and control disabled people have in their lives.
- It will give disabled people a strong voice locally
